Americans see politics behind the U.S. Department of the Interior decision to prevent any expansion of oil and natural gas drilling in the Atlantic, Pacific and eastern Gulf of Mexico. According to a public opinion poll conducted by Harris Interactive for API, 63 percent of respondents believe the decision is based on politics; only 30 percent believe the ban is based on science.

The administration is erecting more roadblocks to offshore drilling. According to published reports, the government will require an environmental assessment for each and every deepwater well. It also plans to extend the government's timeframe for exploration plan review from 30 to 90 days.

In a major policy reversal, the Obama administration yesterday announced that it would not include potentially energy-rich areas of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic, and the Pacific in the government's next five-year offshore leasing plan. API President and CEO Jack Gerard yesterday sent a letter to Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar, providing the industry's thoughts and concerns about the proposed Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI). This new entity, as proposed by the government, would provide a forum for a collaborative government-industry research initiative aimed at improving the safety of U.S. offshore energy development.
