BP has just issued a news release outlining its operational response to the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. In addition to working with Transocean to use ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to assess the well and the blow out preventer on the seafloor, BP has initiated a plan to immediately drill a relief well using a nearby drilling rig.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig sunk beneath the surface of the water this morning, but the fire was continuing. Meanwhile, the search and rescue mission for the missing 11 workers is still underway.

Please say a prayer today for our colleagues who were working on the Deepwater Horizon mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) last night when a fire broke out. According to reports, 126 workers were onboard. In a statement, Transocean reports that a "substantial majority" of the crew members are safe, however several workers were injured and some remain unaccounted for at this time. Search and rescue operations are underway.

News flash: Global oil demand is expected to peak between 95 and 110 million barrels a day, according to BP's CEO Tony Hayward. As reported by Reuters yesterday, Hayward expects oil demand will begin to decline probably after 2020. Today the world consumes about 85 million barrels of oil a day.
