A new report conducted on behalf of API by Robert Shapiro of Sonecon, LLC, examines the financial impact of investments in oil and natural gas companies on the overall performance of the two largest public employee pension funds in each of four states - Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The data shows these investments sharply out-performed the funds' other assets.

The village of Mansfield in Tioga County, Penn., describes itself as a "quaint, Victorian town lined with cozy cafes, antique shops, and farmers' markets...nestled in the picturesque mountains of North Central Pennsylvania." Pennsylvania appears to be having a knee-jerk reaction to a commonly-used process to produce natural gas from shale rock formations. In the past few days, the outgoing governor has imposed a ban on all new natural gas drilling on public lands, and Pittsburgh's City Council has passed a bill to ban drilling within the city limits.
