In a major policy reversal, the Obama administration yesterday announced that it would not include potentially energy-rich areas of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic, and the Pacific in the government's next five-year offshore leasing plan. Further, the administration also officially delayed the next two lease sales for the central and western Gulf.

Many parts of the United States are experiencing an Arctic blast today. North Dakota could hit 50 degrees below zero, eastern Nebraska is likely to see temperatures as low as 35 below, while the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states have received a fresh layer of snow ranging from a foot to a few inches. In the Deep South, citrus growers have been scrambling to protect their trees from overnight temperatures in the 20s.

The 49th state in the Union is marked by its uniqueness. Alaska is the largest of all 50 states. It is the only state where the sun doesn't set in summer and doesn't rise far above the horizon in the winter. It contains some of America's largest oil and natural gas deposits, many of which remain untapped. And its residents could be more affected by the Waxman-Markey climate bill than many other U.S. citizens.
