The New York State Assembly passed a measure placing a six-month moratorium on hydraulic fracturing late yesterday. The state Senate passed the ban in August, and now the legislation will go to Gov. David Paterson for his signature.

Pennsylvania appears to be having a knee-jerk reaction to a commonly-used process to produce natural gas from shale rock formations. In the past few days, the outgoing governor has imposed a ban on all new natural gas drilling on public lands, and Pittsburgh's City Council has passed a bill to ban drilling within the city limits.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell yesterday signed an executive order halting natural gas development on state lands. In a statement, he said the ban was needed "to protect our un-leased public lands from this [drilling] rush." After a months-long investigation, the Department of the Interior made the right decision and ended the deepwater drilling moratorium. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said it was "appropriate" to end the ban because safety measures have been strengthened and spill response capabilities have been improved.
