The National Journal reports this morning that Senate Republicans and House Democrats "both released comprehensive plans for job creation this week," managing to agree on quite a bit including "incentivizing deployment of natural gas, the fuel attracting the most support from both parties as an alternative to oil."

At API, we've been saying for many years that the United States needs a broad portfolio of energy, including oil, natural gas, nuclear, coal, and a wide variety of alternatives such as solar and wind. Some are best used to generate electricity with the existing infrastructure, while oil is necessary to provide liquid fuels for transportation.

As you might recall, the Times criticized the handling and disposal of drilling waste water, implying that natural gas operations might be harming water supplies in several Northeastern cities. The Times offered no solid facts to back up its assertions.

It's being called a monster. It's the biggest natural gas well in North Texas' Barnett Shale formation, and in September it produced more than 17.8 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.

It provides fuel for industry, power for heating, and chemicals for plastics, medicines and a wide variety of consumer products, such bicycle helmets and hospital supplies, that make Americans safer, healthier, and more comfortable. At the current rate of consumption, it's estimated that the United States has enough natural gas to last about 100 years.
