Yesterday author, lawyer and blogger Byron King sent me a copy of an article, published in Outstanding Investments newsletter, expressing his thoughts on the tragic loss of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Byron writes that the accident "is hitting home" with him. He recently visited a drillship owned by Transocean, which is the same company that owns and operated the rig that caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Mexico. What he learned apparently gave him a profound sense of respect for the crew.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported this morning that the search is continuing for the 11 missing crew members of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. The mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) caught fire on Tuesday and sank yesterday, causing concerns about a potential oil spill.

BP has just issued a news release outlining its operational response to the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. In addition to working with Transocean to use ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) to assess the well and the blow out preventer on the seafloor, BP has initiated a plan to immediately drill a relief well using a nearby drilling rig.

Two new studies commissioned by API illustrate the benefits of the 1995 Deep Water Royalty Relief Act. As we explained on Monday, the act purposefully created financial incentives for drilling in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and it led to new technologies and huge investments in the production of domestic oil and natural gas.

Please say a prayer today for our colleagues who were working on the Deepwater Horizon mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) last night when a fire broke out. According to reports, 126 workers were onboard. In a statement, Transocean reports that a "substantial majority" of the crew members are safe, however several workers were injured and some remain unaccounted for at this time. Search and rescue operations are underway.

In today's episode, I interview Rep. Dean Cannon, Speaker Designate of the Florida House of Representatives, about his bill to open up Florida's State-owned waters to offshore drilling. Rep. Cannon says this proposed bill would help boost the state's economy while protecting Florida's tourism sector. He also references a recent study, conducted by the Willis Group, which shows the low risks associated with offshore drilling.

Many people in Washington and New York apparently have short memories. A case-in-point is the Deepwater Royalty Relief Act, which was passed during the Clinton Administration to encourage energy companies to develop oil and natural gas in the deep waters of the Gulf of the Mexico.

U.S. refineries produced more gasoline in March --9.3 million barrels a day--than in any month since API began keeping records. Furthermore, March gasoline deliveries (a key measure of gasoline demand) were higher than in any previous March.
