Oil prices on the global marketplace rose by $1.86 cents a barrel, or more than 2 percent, yesterday after the presidential oil spill commission recommended more government action to improve safety in the Gulf of Mexico. According to published reports, the commission's conclusions raised fears that the government might slow oil production from its already depressed levels.

The presidential commission examining the Deepwater Horizon accident has determined that several missteps contributed last April's blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, including poor decision-making by the companies' management and government regulators. According to an excerpt from its report, the commission found the tragedy "was not the product of a series of abberational decisions made by a rogue industry...the root causes are systemic" and should be corrected.

Americans will take to the roads in record numbers this holiday season. AAA projects that travel will rise by 3.1 percent to 92.3 million during the Dec. 23-Jan. 2 holiday period. The New York State Assembly passed a measure placing a six-month moratorium on hydraulic fracturing late yesterday. The state Senate passed the ban in August, and now the legislation will go to Gov. David Paterson for his signature.

American voters understand that higher taxes are the wrong prescription for domestic oil and natural gas development. In an election-night poll conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by API, 60 percent of voters opposed a tax increase on the oil and natural gas industry, and 54 percent said an increase could destroy jobs.
