America’s oil and natural gas industry supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and 8 percent of the U.S. economy. Industry’s extensive network of 30,000 vendors, suppliers, and contractors create and support jobs and grow the economy in every state in the union and almost every congressional district.
What this speaks to is the unprecedented opportunity created by America’s 21st century energy renaissance, which is a direct result of technical advances in the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. If we seize this moment in our history and work together on energy policies that promote the safe and responsible development of our nation’s enormous energy resources, our industry will not only create and support millions of well-paying jobs far into the future, but also make America a global energy superpower for generations.

Here’s a link to a well-done video produced by Fortune magazine, showing a little bit about what it’s like to work on an oil and natural gas production platform more than 100 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. The video’s producers visited Chevron’s Tahiti platform and interviewed a couple of the facility’s workers to gain insight into the two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off nature of life on the platform.

API has a new website – Oilgasworkforce.com – launched to help meet the twin challenges of attracting the workers needed to sustain and grow America’s energy revolution, as well as provide the next generation of employees to replace those who will be retiring in the next few years.
The new website is an easy-to-use portal for those interested in industry-related jobs, training and more – offered in both English and Spanish versions. John Modine, vice president of Global Industry Services, discussed the site during a conference call with reporters:
“Not only are there tremendous opportunities brought about by shale development, the oil and gas industry is at the beginning of what insiders are calling the ‘great crew change,’ where a new generation of employees is needed to replace a huge retiring workforce. … The bottom line is that in order to maintain America’s status as a global energy leader, we will need an ‘all hands on deck’ approach to recruitment and retention of the next generation of oil and natural gas workers, which is the fundamental goal of www.oilgasworkforce.com.”
