The nationwide average price of gasoline remained steady at $3.095 a gallon yesterday, according to AAA. As we've reported here many times, the cost of crude oil is the largest factor in the price of gasoline, but excise taxes also account for a large percentage of the pump price.

American voters understand that higher taxes are the wrong prescription for domestic oil and natural gas development. In an election-night poll conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by API, 60 percent of voters opposed a tax increase on the oil and natural gas industry, and 54 percent said an increase could destroy jobs.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell yesterday signed an executive order halting natural gas development on state lands. In a statement, he said the ban was needed "to protect our un-leased public lands from this [drilling] rush."
