The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that in November, U.S. oil production hit 10.038 million barrels per day

– the most in half a century. Three big takeaways: America is stronger and our future is more secure; our industry's technologies are building a better future; and U.S. energy is in it for the long haul.

For the first installment of my API Chart of the Month series, let’s look at a pair of charts that show the strengthening of U.S. trade positions for petroleum – crude oil and refined products – and natural gas – supported by trade pacts such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This is especially timely given the possibility trade will come up during tonight’s State of the Union address.

Looking ahead to Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address, let’s hope the speech helps Washington focus on accelerating gains made by U.S. energy over the past several months. America’s natural gas and oil renaissance has boosted the economy and Americans’ individual prosperity while strengthening our country’s security and making significant environmental strides. Time to double down on that progress.

Opening new access to federal natural gas and oil reserves – offshore and onshore – is vital to growing America’s energy renaissance. Yet, every now and then some suggest our industry isn’t interested in exploring and developing new areas, particularly offshore. They just haven’t been listening. The fact is natural gas and oil companies strongly support increased access to offshore reserves and are saying so publicly – offering a number of strong reasons the federal government should create a robust offshore leasing program for the 2019-2024 timeframe.

Soon, the Interior Department is expected to release its draft offshore leasing program that will shape natural gas and oil development on the federal outer continental shelf (OCS) for the next five years, 2019-2024. Recognizing that the leasing program only outlines where lease auctions could be conducted, let’s take a look at some offshore basics to provide full context to a process that’s critically important to our country’s future energy security.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission’s approval of the Keystone XL pipeline is a significant milestone for a project that would enhance crude oil delivery from Canada to U.S. refineries on the Gulf Coast while also increasing U.S. energy security. The decision’s immediate significance is to underscore the validity of using of established processes to debate, review and decide large energy infrastructure projects like Keystone XL.

Key points about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), as debate over whether to open a portion of ANWR to oil and natural gas development begins a new chapter with an important U.S. Senate hearing on Thursday: ANWR’s energy potential is large – Alaska large; ANWR can be safely developed; and ANWR is part of a long-term U.S. energy vision.

What we see here are the outlines of a serious disconnect between current U.S. offshore policy and reality – that with the U.S. and the world projected to see significant growth in energy demand, the United States has more than 90 percent of its offshore reserves locked away, unavailable even for the studies and tests needed to determine the potential size and location of those reserves.

Given the long lead times needed to develop the offshore, the United States’ current policy posture needs a course correction.

Putting together three big takeaways from EIA's report, the ongoing U.S. renaissance in natural gas and oil production puts America in a strong position for the future, especially in the context of rising world energy demand. Continued growth in domestic natural gas and oil production offers the U.S. a chance to grow in its energy self-sufficiency.
