API’s first-ever Super Bowl ad, announcing the launch of our new “Power Past Impossible” communications campaign, had a few folks online questioning the ad’s connection between oil and space exploration – questions we’ll show are off-base later in this post.

Confusion by some about oil and space flight actually points to the main thrust of the ad and the campaign: Natural gas and oil are much, much more than just fuels. Oil and gas are all around us – in paint, makeup, the components in bionic parts, life-saving medical technology, clean fuels, space suits and … rockets. When you start thinking about it, the list is virtually endless.

The Super Bowl ad and the national communications campaign it launches are a big deal for API and the more than 600 companies that belong to our trade association. The campaign (see the website, here) will underscore how natural gas and oil are a vital part of the everyday lives of American consumers … how they make the impossible achievable. It also will convey our industry’s self-view: relevant, empowering and futuristic

America’s energy renaissance is producing record volumes of natural gas, helping supply our country’s energy needs and strengthening our security while also advancing climate goals, including reducing carbon dioxide emissions and key pollutants. Thanks to cleaner-burning natural gas, you can make a strong “green” case for hydraulic fracturing, as some are doing.

Good stewardship does not end with ensuring our nation has a plentiful and affordable oil and natural gas supply. Many companies are also prioritizing efforts to reduce waste by constantly developing and applying innovative and productive ways to use and reuse the various byproducts of energy development. These efforts, which have grown in the last few decades, have been successful both for companies that innovate and for the communities where they operate.

Throughout this election season, we’ve campaigned for our candidate: energy. As a policy issue, energy exerts an outsized impact on the issues Americans care about most: lower consumer costs, job creation, economic growth and security. Polls show that voters of all political persuasions appreciate the significant role oil and natural gas production plays in achieving all these vital objectives.

For the oil and gas industry, former buildings, facilities, well pads and rigs often hold promise of a second life for both local communities and the environment, whether it’s turning an offshore rig into an artificial reef, reclaiming an onshore drill site or repurposing a building or port to fit a variety of socially beneficial needs. All are examples of industry’s commitment to being a responsible neighbor on land and in the sea.

With Halloween nearly upon us, just about everyone’s got a set of stencils for turning pumpkins into fantastic jack-o-lanterns. The U.S. Energy Department’s collection of energy-themed stencils is terrific, but lacks patterns for oil and natural gas. Considering that oil and gas supply 65 percent of the energy Americans use today and are projected to furnish 67 percent of our energy in 2040, that got us to thinking: “Hey, without oil and natural gas, there wouldn’t be pumpkins to carve!”

Piggy-backing on the start of the Series, we’ve filled out a lineup card of our own – America’s Energy Lineup. It’s a fantastic lineup with contributors at every position – no “Who’s on First, What’s on Second” shenanigans with this group . They’re all major leaguers, a great mix of energy sources that includes reliable veterans as well as exciting up-and-comers, anchored by clutch, big-time producers in the key power spots, Nos. 3 and 4.

Bottom line: When America’s all-of-the-above energy lineup is in the field, we all win.
