Dilley, Texas: Shale Energy Helps the ‘Good Life’ Get Better

As you drive into Dilley, in the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale play in South Texas, a green road sign reads, “Pop. 3674.” The sign has some catching up to do, just as the town is doing. Dilley, which promotes itself as “a slice of the good life,” is indeed that, riding growth spurred by natural gas and oil development. More jobs, more people and demand for the things they need, which is driving overall economic growth in a place that hadn’t seen much opportunity until a year or so ago.
“This has been a plus for the city of Dilley,” says City Administrator Melissa Gonzalez, “because now with the Eagle Ford Shale, we are able to bring and promote those kind of things here in the city” – jobs, housing construction, hotels and other business growth."
