Keystone XL and the National Interest

The national-interest implications of the Keystone XL pipeline project were the focus of speakers at a jobs summit in Indianapolis last week. Jobs and energy - how could they not be in the national interest?
"We know that in terms of the economic and energy security of the United States that this makes total sense," Canada's U.S. ambassador, Gary Doer, said of the pipeline project. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels zeroed in on the project's economic implications:
"We've got a huge opportunity before us to start back on the way to prosperity ... to start back on the way to a hopeful society, a society where people know that there's a better tomorrow and they know that there's a job waiting for them."
